Founder and Director of Autism Services at The Autism Awareness Company
Andrew is a trainer who has a diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome, PDA and ADD. He has the unique experience of having 45 years of insiders’ information on the condition and how it affects daily lives. He was also employed as a support worker for the National Autistic Society working with both Low and High Functioning Autism and Aspergers Syndrome. More recently he has developed a special talent as a trainer, generously sharing personal experiences to simplify complex issues.
I have had a different and sometimes difficult road to walk in my life; the road has led me through school exclusions, borstal, the judicial system and prison. My lack of social development has led me to missing out on many of the normal enjoyments of live such as enjoying friendships, joining social groups and cherishing the experiences of first love. My behaviour and mood swings led to my mother experiencing a breakdown and the loss of my fathers love.
I was eventually diagnosed in my early 20’s with psychosis and placed on a range of medication, there were no benefits as the diagnosis was wrong and as such any interventions were incorrect. Finally in 2007 at the age of 42 I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, Pathological Demand Avoidance and Attention Deficit Disorder. I have since had two birthdays as I believe that I was reborn on the day of my diagnosis, finally I could understand who I was and how my condition affected me, with this knowledge I could learn and apply new skill sets and begin to live my life to the full.
I have now dedicated my life to understanding my condition; I seek and learn new skill sets to assist me in living a better life. I have also decided that I should pass on any knowledge that I may have to others in the hope that I can prevent anyone else having to go through the experiences that I did.
I have autism specific training which includes:
SPELL 1 & SPELL 2 Studio 3 (Managing Challenging Behaviour using Low Arousal Techniques) Understanding & Managing people with Autism Spectrum Conditions (including Neuro Linguistic Programming) POVA (Protection of Vulnerable Adults) POCA (Protection of Children Act)
I have had the unique experience of having had 47 years of insider’s information on the condition and how it affects an individual in their daily lives. I can identify, understand and empathise with the difficulties faced by individuals who are on the Autism Spectrum. I have valuable experience of working with people on the Autism Spectrum and have found that the skills I have learnt and developed have made a positive improvement in their lives.
